The Craving
Being, helping, and training high risk professionals has its perks. Long hours, heat, cold, darkness, hunger, thirst, and general feelings of frustration, irritation, and fatigue (both mental and physical). These are the things that they don't tell you on the recruiting posters or commercials. But, ironically, that is what it's all about for us. Persevering where most people would not. Coming back from the brink of uncontrollability again and again. Most of us fear it. All of us need it. We just don't know it yet.
That is where the resilience story begins. At the core of the human condition. Why do we always want to be challenged and get bored? Why do we want to do meaningful work that "gets us out of bed" in the morning? Because we cave at our core a position of resilience. It's that feeling you get when you make it through a life threatening situation and perform at your best. It's that feeling that you get when you learn something new and nail it. Flow. In the zone. Lots of words that mean the same thing.
Being resilient is nothing new. It's in our core as humans. It's what makes us human. It's part of our DNA. So the best thing you can do is to move yourself toward a position of resilience today. Plan on it. Start your own personal training across all 4 resilience dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
You may not be a high risk professional, but you can certainly train, think and feel like one!
