Miracles

I am reminded of the story about a grandfather who was digging potatoes alongside his grandson in the garden out back. After several hours of hard work, the little fellow looked up into his grandfather’s face and asked, “Grandpa, why did you bury all these things here in the first place?”

This little vignette reminds me of several things about life. The first is that it reminds me of the miracle to have life. To look into the sky on a dark night and survey the expanse of the universe and know that I (you!) are a connection to such a cosmic expanse and have the ability to ponder your existence.

We are small alone but connected we are colossal! We are destined/created for great things.

Also, the story above reminds me of how the little things, too, have enormity. Digging in the dirt with grandpa or child might be called a “little thing”, but it contains great significance. That is something that also makes life miraculous.

Being with someone who needs you, being with someone you need and asking them deep questions or simply sitting with that person in silence. In the silence of that time you are hearing the pattern of breath, the beat of heart, and you’re seeing the light in their eyes.

Maybe you too will ask, “Why am I here in the first place?”
